A Visual Memoir

Twenty-five years ago, Swierenga's painting journey began with an introductory class at the College of DuPage, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. In the semesters that followed, Swierenga had the opportunity to experiment with various painting mediums and techniques, such as oils, egg tempera, encaustic, watercolor, fresco, and acrylic. As Swierenga developed her painting practice, she focused primarily on realism in oils. In 2007, she started painting in watercolor and became a member of the Illinois Watercolor Society, achieving Signature membership in 2010. She briefly attended painting classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and taught watercolor painting at the Community School of the Arts at Wheaton College for five years. Swierenga joined the Elmhurst Artists Guild in 2013, where she is currently a member. EAG Solo Show: Joan Ladendorf

MARCH 2 – APRIL 12, 2024

Common Threads

“Common Threads”, a new exhibition by artist Joan Ladendorf, will open March 6, 2024 in the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild Gallery located inside the Elmhurst Art Museum. Joan’s work was featured in March of 2019 in the same gallery in a retrospective show titled “Collections”. Her new show will feature only work created since then. Joan calls her current artwork style “Digital Photo Collage.”

Her unique creations are assembled from bits and pieces of photos she has taken. For additional interest and texture, she creates hand-painted and hand-altered recycled papers which are scanned and incorporated in the compositions. Shapes are drawn with the computer mouse, sections of the papers and photos are chosen, and all are combined in Photoshop in a collage style, with added dimensional effects.
